EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS
Emergency Management and
Preparedness Committee
The Federal Emergency Management Agency Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama, is known as the nation’s premier all-hazards training center. Emergency
nurses can take a variety of emergency preparedness training
courses specifically designed for healthcare personnel, including
emergency response training for mass casualty incidents and
hazardous materials operations.
When ENA member Donna Hovey, MPPM, BSN, RN, CEN, CCRN,
attended her first CDP training session in 2010, it was “love at first
sight.”
Emergency preparedness became her passion, said Hovey, former
director of nursing for the emergency department at Montefiore
Weiler Hospital, Einstein division, in the Bronx, New York.
“You provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people,”
she said. “That is what really impacted me.”
Hovey’s enthusiasm for emergency preparedness is shared by the
other members of the 2016 ENA Emergency Management and
Preparedness Committee: Sue Anne Bell, PhD, RN, FNP-BC; Janet L.
Kaiser, RN, CEN; Daniel Nadworny, MSN, RN; Carole Snyder, MS, BSN,
RN; and ENA Board of Directors liaison Mike Hastings, MSN, RN, CEN.
The committee held a conference call at the beginning of the year to
determine the most pertinent, cutting-edge topics to address in 2016.
“We also looked at issues where there was some ambiguity, where
we could really take a position and facilitate discussion,” said Hovey.
Responding to an active shooter in the ED and hospital emergency
codes were the two topics the committee deemed worthy of the
most attention this year, said Hovey. The committee is developing a
Topic Brief on the active shooter in the ED and a position statement
on hospital emergency codes and how emergency situations are
identified.
