Thinking About Trauma Nursing
Certification?
Certification is a great way to demonstrate specialized knowledge and skill in a unique area of nursing practice. Emergency nursing encompasses a broad variety of
specialties, and the latest certification exam, the Trauma
Certified Registered Nurse, is a cornerstone of practice for
many emergency nurses. Whether you work in a trauma center
or are the expert within your hospital that sees a lower
volume of trauma patients, certification with the new TCRN is
a great way to show your colleagues, your administration and
your patients that you are a trauma specialist.
The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing released the
beta test for this new certification in late 2015. All seats for
the TCRN were quickly filled. The TCRN now takes its place
alongside the other emergency nurse certifications as an
emergency nursing credential, including the Certified
Emergency Nurse, the Certified Flight Registered Nurse, the
Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse and the Certified
Transport Registered Nurse.
If you are considering taking the TCRN examination, here is
some information to help you prepare. It is recommended that
those sitting for the exam have at least two years of
experience caring for trauma patients. This isn’t limited to
trauma care in the ED, but across the continuum. For the
emergency nurse, this means you need to know about care of
the trauma patient beyond the ED, into the operating suite,
into the intensive care unit, to rehabilitation and to home care.
Knowing the potential outcomes and complications for
identified traumatic injuries will help prepare you for this test.
Additionally, there are questions about quality
management, data collection, safety and trauma systems.
